Intake of vinegar beverage is associated with restoration of ovulatory function in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Wu D, Kimura F, Takashima A et al. Tohoku J Exp Med 2013; 230(1): 17-23
Seven Japanese women (23-40 years) with polycystic ovary syndrome consumed a beverage containing 15 g of apple vinegar (750 mL acetic acid) immediately after dinner daily for 90 to 110 days. Intake of vinegar beverage resulted in:
ƒ ovulatory menstruation occurring within 40 days in four of seven patients, including both of the obese patients;
ƒ a (non-significant) decrease of the luteinizing hormone/follicle stimulating hormone ratio in five of seven patients, including all four patients who resumed ovulation within 40 days;
ƒ a (non-significant) decrease of the homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in the six patients who were measured for this parameter.
A patient who had been infertile for 2 years took the vinegar beverage for another 2 months after regular intake for 90 days and became pregnant without any other treatment.
